In general, at this age, we approach children with teacher-directed, group instruction followed by differentiated activities to match their unique developmental levels.

Macmillan/McGraw-Hill curriculum:  Beginning to Read, Write and Listen - A phonetics-based reading program incorporating spelling, comprehension skills, penmanship, punctuation, sequencing, rhyming, and high-frequency sight words.

Basic animal and plant characteristics
- Other science concepts are covered in detail in the afternoon

  • Music

Demonstrate steady beat, identify quarter notes, half notes, treble and bass clefs, and pitch through rote singing.

UNIT THREE:  The Human Body     (6 weeks)
   Week #5 -- Visible, outside parts of the Body: arm, legs, head, ankle, toes, etc.
      Your fives senses:  sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch
      Inside your body (overview) 
      One day lesson --  Animals in Autumn:  hibernation, migration, adaptations
   Week #6  -- Structure: bones and muscles
      Circulation & Respiration: heart, blood, lungs
      One day lesson -- Columbus Day    
   Week #7 -- Digestion: mouth, stomach, intestines, colon
      Brain
      One day lesson -- Fire Safety
   Week #8 -- Taking care of your body
      Dealing with germs
      Sleep

   Week #9 -- Nutrition

UNIT FIVE:  Christmas Customs of Mexico    (3 weeks)

UNIT SIX:  Weather     (4 weeks)

      Presidents: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, current president
   Week #22:  Flag, The Pledge of Allegiance, The National Anthem 
      Statue of Liberty, American symbols: eagle, etc.

UNIT EIGHT:  Space   (4 weeks)
   Week #23  Day and Night, Shadows, The Sun    
   Week #24  Stars     
   Week #25  Moon/Astronauts   
   Week #26  Planets/Solar system

UNIT NINE:   Earth    (4 weeks) (Spring Break usually occurs during this unit)
   Week #27 -- Rocks and Soil   
   Week #28 -- Landforms: Mountains, Valleys, Deserts, Prairie, Forests 
      Caring for the Earth: Conservation and Recycling
   Week #29 -- Bodies of Water:  rivers, lakes, glaciers……and oceans!  
   Week #30 -- Creatures of the Sea: Coral reefs, Fish, Shells, Sea Mammals
   
UNIT TEN:  Amphibians and Reptiles     (2 weeks)     
   Week #31  Frogs and Toads
